Looks like the pastel trend is here to stay in 2016 with Pantone releasing, for the first time, the blending of two shades as the Pantone colour of 2016.
Rose quartz, a light pink is a “warmer embracing rose tone” while Serenity, a baby blue colour, is a “cooler tranquil blue.”
Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute explained "...consumers seek mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to modern day stresses, welcoming colours that psychologically fulfill our yearning for reassurance and security are becoming more prominent."
She went on to explain that the decision to select these two shades to reflect society's shift towards gender fluidity.
"In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted colour trends throughout all other areas of design. This more unilateral approach to colour is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumer's increased comfort with using colour as a form of expression, a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to colour usage." Eiseman said.
Pantone also released official colour pairings for the two shades. Whether in soft or hard materials the pairing of these two colours brings calm and relaxation, something which is paramount in homes of today. Appealing in all finishes, matte, metallic and glossy, this combination of colours joins easily with other mid-tones including greens and purples, rich browns and shades of yellow and pink.
